Until Next Time

Sitting down to write, I find myself homesick for such remote places as Alaska. The sweet smell of nature on the remote islands in the Kenai Fjords still lingers with me. One of the special moments I find myself sinking back into was on the only sunny, clear morning we had, where we took the kayaks out and picked salmon berries on the rocky beach while singing sea shanties to keep the bears away. It was simple living, and that's part of what made that moment, and the trip in general, so special.

While the views were incredible, the crew was equally as special. I don't think the trip would have been the same without them. They were the kind of people that I would have wanted to be friends with, and they each inspired me to be adventurous, daring, and curious in different ways. The unconventional lifestyle that they live further inspired me to lean into my own nomadic inclinations, and I'm deeply grateful for that.

During our final evening on the waters of the Kenai Fjords, we kayaked with the captain and first mate to a small island and built a bonfire, skipped rocks, and picked up trash on the shoreline. It was one of those experiences where you do everything in your power to be present and, at the same time, lock those moments into memory.

Until next time, Alaska. We'll see each other again soon.
