Coastal Adventures in Puerto Rico
About two years ago, I had the rare opportunity to accompany my father on a four-day trip to Puerto Rico. Originally planned as a graduation gift, the trip had been delayed for two years due to COVID. When the day finally arrived, we flew to Aguadilla on a Friday, eager to make the most of our time there.
Our journey began in Rincón, where we grabbed some surfboards, dropped off our belongings, and headed straight to the beach. We ended up at Maria’s Beach, where I shot an entire roll of film and surfed for over six hours. As the day came to an end, I tried to capture the stunning sunset, watching as it dipped below the endless ocean. Exhausted but content, we went to bed early, ready to repeat the cycle the next day.
The following morning, we traveled back to Aguadilla for more surfing and sightseeing. Along the way, we stopped in several small towns, allowing me to take photos and immerse myself in some of the most unique corners of Puerto Rico. Each day was a gift—perfect waves, sun-kissed skin, delicious food, and plenty of smiles.
On the last night of the trip, I visited one of my best friends at his new home, the perfect way to close out the journey. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Over the course of the trip, I shot six rolls of Cinestill 400D—my first time truly testing that film stock. When I saw the scans, I fell in love with its vibrant colors and halations. Though my camera had a light leak on some frames, it added a unique touch, making each exposure feel special and one of a kind.
Looking back, I can say without a doubt that this trip was a blessing. I had the chance to spend quality time with both family and friends while also capturing a body of work I’m incredibly proud of. I'm currently working on a photo zine to showcase this special region. Follow my Instagram, @david_diquollo, or check out my website here, to learn more and join me on this creative journey!
