Please introduce yourself and tell us a bit about who you are.
Hi, I’m Karina! I’m originally from Ukraine, and although I have a background in dentistry, my career is now fully dedicated to analog fashion photography. I currently live in Lisbon and work with brands and clients worldwide. So far, I’ve had the opportunity to shoot in places like Paris, Barcelona, the Azores, and Madeira. And of course, I love shooting on film throughout all of my travels.
How did you first get into photography?
My love for photography started when I was around 13, thanks to my friend Ira. She used to visit her grandmother in the village where I grew up, and she had a Canon camera. She took some photos of me, and it completely opened up this new and exciting world. (And by the way, I still love Canon gear to this day!) Later, my parents gave me my first camera for my 16th birthday. I started photographing myself and my friends, and it naturally became a part of who I am.
What drew you to making photography such a central part of your life and work?
I spent 10 years dedicated to dentistry—through both my studies and professional practice—only to realize I couldn’t see a future for myself in it. The idea of owning a clinic didn’t appeal to me at all; in fact, work brought me more anxiety than fulfillment.
The turning point came with the full-scale war in Ukraine in 2022. It was a brutal reminder that life is fragile and can change in an instant. It made me realize that doing what you love is the only thing that truly matters. I moved to Lisbon that same year and have been fully dedicated to photography ever since.
More than anything, I’m driven by a sense of freedom. Being able to pick up my camera anywhere in the world and remain independent is what I value most. That sense of liberty is what fuels me.
How would you describe your style as a photographer?
I specialize in film photography, working primarily with magazines, brands, influencers, and actors. I would describe my style as a balance between minimalistic simplicity and intentional storytelling. I always aim to convey a deeper message through my imagery.
What do you hope people feel when they look at your photographs?
At the heart of my work is a personal mission: to inspire others. To me, inspiration is the energy that drives creation—and I believe choosing to create is always the more meaningful path in life.
What kind of work or stories are you most excited to explore next?
I prefer to keep my plans under wraps because, in the end, results are what truly matter. You can come up with the most brilliant idea, but it means nothing without execution. I’m all about taking action. So keep an eye on my social media—you’ll be the first to know. (laughs)
